04/2026 Painting of Saint Mary Magdalene
Easter is not only a period of folk traditions associated with welcoming spring, but it also ranks among the most important Christian holidays. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and in this spiritual and cultural context, the selected exhibit of the month is closely connected – a painting in a gilded frame depicting Saint Mary Magdalene, whose name is inextricably linked with Easter events.
This devotional object comes from an old museum collection, although it lacks prior documentation, and its origin remains unknown. At the center of the painting is a small oval image painted on metal, depicting Mary Magdalene with her traditional attributes. The area surrounding the image is decorated with rocaille ornaments arranged in the form of a stylized branch.
Iconography of the Work
The painting depicts Saint Mary Magdalene, one of the women who accompanied Jesus Christ during his final days and who witnessed his resurrection. She is often portrayed with long, flowing hair and with characteristic attributes – a skull, a cross, a book, or a jar of ointment. In the painting, Mary is surrounded by a blooming branch – a traditional symbol of peace and hope, associated in Christianity with the idea of rebirth and Christ’s victory over death.
Devotional Objects
Devotional objects are sacred items intended to inspire reverence, piety, and faith. They include, for example, reliquaries containing relics, statues and paintings of Christ, the Virgin Mary, or saints, crosses, crucifixes, wayside shrines, as well as items such as medallions, rosaries, or prayer books. These objects accompanied people throughout their lives and were often placed in graves. They served to protect their owners from misfortune and illness, and they were also frequently used to decorate homes.
